Box Social

Posted by thesinger on March 7, 2008

It was a good time. I estimate that there were about 16 boxes. (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.) I purchased a green, square box approximately 10 inches per side. Because it was spring-themed, it was painted with yellow flowers and ornamented with “Hillary”, a three inch tall, green, and obese frog who held a Welcome Spring! sign. My motives for purchasing that box over others was simply that it was the cheapest one to be had. Logic (and my father) tells me that my father approves of “thrifty” sons who don’t waste his money.

Titus auctioneered and Justin was the official “holder of box while bidders bid” kind of person. The proceeds went to the Youth kitty. (Rumor has it she made a goodly sum of approx. $600. i.e. A very fat kitty.) The food in my box consisted of three subs, a relish plate, chocolate chip cookies, chips, and pudding. It was ample, and very tasty.

Afterwards, the majority of the group played an enjoyable and exhausting game of Human Dutch Blitz. My team, which consisted of Jewel, Karen, Micheal Y., Kenneth, and myself, lost miserably, but felt that were the best losers we knew how to be. 🙂

I have two pictures I would like to share, both of which came from other people’s cameras since I forgot to take mine. (Shem and shame were mine during this time of forgetfulness.) The committee forced all “couples” to take their picture together. (Loyal took this one) It’s of me, my newly purchased box, Hillary, and the maker of the box. (I will allow my readership to deduce whatever they will concerning the evident action of the maker of the box.)

The next picture has a more random touch to it, but is nevertheless pertinent (I’m not sure how). The primary reason for the picture is that the three of us, Danny, Kenneth, and myself, all wore orange shirts. I thought it was impressive that the three of us sat down together just because we could, and we were all wearing orange. (Small thrills, I know, but small minds must have something to occupy their minds.)

Most box socials have stress in some areas, and this one was no different. All stress aside, it was an enjoyable evening with an enjoyable group of homies.

Concordia Choir is coming to town!!!!

Posted by thesinger on March 3, 2008

Well, the nearby town of Wichita, KS, that is. Oh, and a good friend called me up with lots of juicy tidbits about the program. (He had attended a concert on this same tour somewhere in the “east.”) Oh, I am getting SO pumped!!!! And oh, so, JUMPY!!!! wow, I might not be able to get as much school done tomorrow as would be good just because I’m so, entirely, well, so entirely taken up with this idea. And, oh, SO EXCITED!

In other news, Messiah drags on. Neal continues to abuse the sopranos and they continue to give him only a small portion of their abilities. I am completely confident that there is a correlation between those two facts.

Chorus is moving along at a nice easy pace. Shane is doing well, even if directing isn’t his first love. Note accuracy will come much faster for the tenors this year because they are far more confident than last year. My goal for the tenors is to lead them to sing with precision and agility. They are progressing well.

As of yet, I enjoy the process of writing much more than “speechifying”. I am a lover of precision in my studies and feel that my meager abilities as a speech-maker don’t lend themselves well to precision. For myself, speechifying feels as though a farmer were attempting brain surgery on some poor victim, ending with a bloody mess of “brain” on the floor; a painful metaphor, I know, but very illustrative. Not enough precision, not enough precision. . .

Um. um. what should I say next? Oh, that was close. I’m actually not standing in front of people wondering what to say. . . It’s as though, um, I have stress with um, placing my thoughts, um, in a logical, well, how would you say it? Order? And then, um, really wondering just, like, how it’s going to, um, come out. . . Yes, I’m, um, in speech class right now. And um, I really think I should quit using um, “um”, quite so um, much. I, like, um, really struggle with filler words, like, um, well, like, um.

“The Speech” is done.

Posted by thesinger on February 7, 2008

I’m enjoying life once again. One would think that speech class is a good thing, (I do), but one must also think of all the stress that it places on the mind and on the body. For example, my appetite left me while I was working on preparing my speech. I didn’t notice it much then, but as I was walking out of speech class, I noted with wonder that I was hungry and actually felt like eating something for a change. Pain.

Stress on the mind? Well, that ones obvious. It takes massive amounts of brain-work to prepare the outline in a coherent, logical, and somewhat enjoyable manner. Oh, and include with that the stresses involved in doing something new. Pain.

Ah, vell, I can now continue to live my life again, like I did before the speech came around.

I think you’re beginning to get the idea. . .
